Bernard Maybeck: Artisan, Architect, Artist

by

The first in-depth study of one of the greatest American architects. Bernard Maybeck, recipient of the Gold Medal of the American Institute of Architects. Bernard Maybeck is among the most important architects of the 20th century and one of the few great architects who has not been extensively studied in published form. This book-initiated more than twenty years ago-studies both Maybeck the man and his architectural accomplishments. It has been eagerly awaited by thousands of architects and art lovers throughout the country. Jaybeck practiced from the late 19th century through the first quarter of the 20th century, with most of his work being done in Northern California. His architecture was as unique, individual and unclas-sifiable as the man himself, but included such masterworks as the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Berkeley, and the famous gothic mansion, "Wyntoon," built for the Hearsts in 1902. His more modest residences are familiar throughout the Bay Area-rustic, shingle-clad houses and many with more unusual characteristics revealing Maybeck's wondrous eclectic approach to architecture, delighting their fortunate inhabitants, and enriching the neighborhoods where they are found.
