Fly by Night

Ephemeral slips of paper, mementos of past nights, clubs and gigs, windows into other worlds, the flyers in this collection gathered by Craig McCarthy provide a visual record of London?s nightlife and subculture. They are low-budget productions in a variety of styles: hand- made, drawn, traced, cut outs, collages, photocopied ? in marked contrast to the computer-generated flyers of ten years ago. The artists whose work is represented here include Wolfgang Tillmans, Sophie Thunder and Ray Cesar. These inventive, unfurling doodles with hand-drawn lettering and images of dead stars, sexy figures and party monsters provide an alternative history of the ever-changing club scene. Craig McCarthy provides a short introduction about what the flyers mean to him and he gives comments about some of the artwork, the artists and those who put on the nights, such as Matthew Glamorre and You, Me, Bum Bum Train.
