This image is from so80s , a collection of works from the beginning of Patrick McMullan's career when he first started photographing New York's nightclub scene. It depicts a rather indifferent-looking Andy Warhol surrounded by three exuberant downtown divas: Cookie Mueller, Dianne Brill, and Carmel Johnson. Though Warhol's detachment could be seen as a metaphor for the role of the photographer as social documentarian, it is a role McMullan himself has transcended, as he is now just as much a celebrity as the people he photographs. As Warhol himself once said, "If you don't know Patrick McMullan, you ought to get out more!"
