Gary Kuehn

by

Gary Kuehn (*1939 in Plainfield, New Jersey) became known in the sixties for his sculptures, which evolve in the field of tension between Minimalism and Abstract Expressionism. Since then Kuehn has developed an extensive oeuvre between these two intriguing poles. Careful craftsmanship and a sense of material presence distinguish his works, which always have a metaphorical and a psychological dimension as well. For several years now, Kuehn—who has been known to an international audience since his participation in documenta 6 in 1976—has been working on a comprehensive documentation of his body of work. This publication presents some of his best works, selected by Kuehn himself, systematically and chronologically categorized according to individual groups. An essay by Dorothea Zwirner and an interview with the artist by Donna De Salvo shed light on Kuehn’s artistic development.
