Typographer, calligrapher, book designer and teacher Jan Tschichold (1902-1974) published Formenwandlungen der &-Zeichen in 1953. This short historical essay dealt with the successive designs of the ampersand glyph, and also served as a brief and concise introduction to the history of Western writing and typography. Long unavailable in English, this new translation by Jean-Marie Clarke is published in a facsimile version, faithful to the original design by Jan Tschichold and fully capturing his intentions. To celebrate the translation and publication of this facsimile, VTF (the Velvetyne Type Foundry) and French publisher -zeug organized a type design workshop and an international call for ampersand entries. A second booklet presents a curated selection of 288 ampersand glyphs drawn from submissions and workshop results. The two volumes together are a salute to that most beautiful connector of words, the ampersand.
