Kingsley Ifill & Danny Fox – Holy Island

by

An atmospheric collaboration between a photographer and a painter traces the outline of England to reveal its fraying edges. Over the course of eight days in December 2021, Danny Fox and Kingsley Ifill travelled across the length of the British Isles and back again. Setting off from near Dover, Kent, and making their way up the east coast as far as the Isle of Skye, Scotland, to then return by way of the West Midlands, Wales and many others locations on route. With no predetermined course, their journey was one of intuition and self-led discovery, encountering and documenting the reality of the British landscape unfurling ahead of them. Composed of a series of fifty collaborative works on paper which bring together photography by Ifill and paintings by Fox, Holy Island is a visual travelogue of their time spent together: an exploration into the cross-section of rural and urban fabric that makes up Britain today. Kingsley Ifill (b.1988) lives and works between Kent, UK and Paris, France. Ifill’s tactile practice explores screenprinting, photocopying, darkroom printing and risograph – as well as a deep connection to printed matter through his independent publishing imprint Tarmac Press. Selected solo exhibitions include V1 Gallery, Copenhagen; LNCC, Golborne Gallery, Cob Gallery, London; and Gallery Pleasewait in Paris. Danny Fox (b. 1986) lives and works in Cornwall, UK. Profoundly influenced by native St Ives, Fox conjures wild and wonderful scenes of coastal Britain alongside expressive paintings exploring tragedy, promise, violence and sex. His work was recently exhibited at Alexander Berggruen, New York; Eighteen Gallery, Copenhagen; Berggruen Gallery, San Francisco and Zidoun-Bossuyt Gallery, Luxembourg City. Through intuition and self-discovery, their collaborative practice extends conversations between the mediums of painting and photography. Previous collective publications include Eye for a Sty, Tooth for the Roof and Haze , both published by Tarmac Press in 2020. Holy Island was exhibited at Hannah Barry Gallery in London in early 2022.
