Le Corbusier: The Art of Architecture

by

This book presents an overview of the work of Le Corbusier, considered by any to be the most important architect of the twentieth century. Incorporating e most recent scholarly research, it illuminates aspects of his work that are articularly relevant to today's discourse. Seven richly illustrated essays discuss everal leitmotifs in the work of Le Corbusier: his relationship to the Orient and he Mediterranean, his interest in modern media and new technologies, his self-taged persona, and the concept of a synthèse des arts, which manifested itself n the typically Corbusian interplay of architecture, urban planning, painting, design, cinematography and other disciplines. Visual dossiers complement the texts, generously illustrating both famous works and new discoveries, such as film stills taken by Le Corbusier in Arcachon and Rio de Janeiro, the monumental wall mural that he painted in his Parisian office at rue de Sèvres, and a diverse assemblage of contact prints, postcards, sketches and colour photographs by (among others) Lucien Hervé from the holdings of the Getty Archive. A comprehensive illustrated biography provides orientation for readers not yet familiar with the vast lifetime work of Le Corbusier. The catalogue publication contains éssays by Stanislaus von Moos, Arthur Rüegg, Beatriz Colomina, Jean-Louis Cohen, Niklas Maak, Juan José Lahuerta and Mateo Kries.
