Leon Golub

by

Leon Golub, born in Chicago in 1922, is one of the leading postwar painters. Even in his earliest texts, he rejects the formalism of Abstract Expressionism and counters it with an activist, political approach to figurative painting. As a member of the "Monster Roster" group of artists Golub has continued to address the subject of violence and oppression. insisted on the importance of content and in his art The texts reflect Golub's belief in the task of the artist as reporter. They cover every phase of his work and bear witness to his unflinching commitment to the issues of his time. In addition to the texts themselves, the book also includes numerous statements by and interviews with the artist, illustrating his attitude to art and politics in the last four decades.
