Little Theatre of Gestures

by

Little Theatre of Gestures examines the changes we cause in ourselves or in our environment. This exploration begins with Character Sketches, a set of twelve lithographs done by Isaac Mendes Belisario (1794–1849) in 1838 on Jamaica , portraying merchants and craftsmen as well as the masquerades of slaves. This book focuses on the presentation of gestures, the theatricality of objects and bodies in both staged settings and in everyday life. Artists Kutlu g Ataman, Iñaki Bonillas, Gerard Byrne, Jay Chung & Q Takeki Maeda, Rodney Graham, Hilary Lloyd, Kirsten Pieroth, and Susanne M. Winterling employ a variety of media to document the subtle and staged gestures that characterize identity and gender.   Exhibition schedule: Kunstmuseum Basel, Museum für Gegenwartskunst, May 16–August 15, 2009 | Malmö Konsthall, October 10, 2009–January 10, 2010
