In 2023, MacGuffin magazine collaborated with Archief Cairo, a collective based in Egypt, to organize a temporary design studio in November 2023. The week-long event brought together a diverse group of young image-makers, designers, and writers from the region. With the ethos of MacGuffin in mind ("a biannual magazine dedicated to the ubiquitous and oft-overlooked objects around us"), the Arab world was considered through the theme of the letter, investigating the use and reuse of vernacular typography in the Middle East. Roughly fifteen designers and thinkers participated in a series of field trips and lectures, culminating in a workshop co-organized with Archief Cairo.
