New Identities: Contemporary Art From South Africa

The era of Apartheid in South Africa came to an end with the first free elections in 1994. Since then, visual art has played an instrumental role in societal change--the quest for national identity is vividly reflected in its diversity. Showcased in this richly illustrated publication is the diverse and recent work of 17 artists at the forefront of South Africa's contemporary art scene. Traditional forms of artistic expression--Ndebele murals, sculptural drums--are presented as equals to more contemporary works, such as installations and video. This stimulating publication also adresses issues of identity, urbanity and life in a multicultural society.
