Reinterpeted Representation / Remaking Freud

by

Two volumes make up this exhibition catalogue for London-based graphic designer and artist Hyunho Choi's solo exhibition “Reinterpreted Representation” at the Grigo Gallery in Seoul, Korea. Choi's works borrow from books and book culture; his artworks employ tactility, intuition, and timing, with an aim to enable viewers and visitors to use their five senses and find their own meaning and sequence as they encounter his work. His exhibition works are themselves a work in progress. For one project, “Freud: first sentence / Freud: poetry,” Choi prepared a workspace in the gallery where visitors could freely combine sentences drawn from the book Freud: First Sentences (a book consisting of first sentences from books found in the Freud section at the library of Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design in London). These reconstituted phrases clash, remake themselves, and create new meaning. Partially impacted by the audience's subconscious participation, the resulting poetic recombinations are both coincidental and revealing. A booklet of these creations accompanies the exhibition catalog, creating a set that amply illustrates both a specific participatory work of Choi while documenting the overall exhibition.
