"Color is my theme, and its representation is my painting." This, according to Richard Anuszkiewicz, the most important exponent of Op Art next to Victor Vasarely, is the ostensibly simple common denominator of his paintings. Having begun his career with realistic paintings clearly influenced by Edward Hopper, Anuszkiewicz became acquainted with Paul Klee's principles of colour under the tutelage of Josef Albers. From that point on, he devoted himself entirely to his work with optical colour combinations. Over a period of many years, and even after Op Art had begun to wane in significance, Anuskiewicz explored the interplay of colours and their diverse effects upon our perception. He completed entire series of complex canvases, many of which literally dazzle the eye. This book is devoted to a comprehensive view of Anuszkiewicz's technically superb, minutely detailed paintings and constructions. The artist: Richard Anuszkiewicz, born 1930 in Erie, USA. 1953-1955: studied art under Joseph Albers at the Yale University School of Art and Architecture; 1957: moved to New York; completed his first "optical" paintings; 1960: first solo exhibition in New York; 1968: exhibited at documenta IV; 1986: exhibited at the 42nd Venice Biennale; lives and works in Englewood, USA.
