Undeciphered Characters in the Palace of Typographic Masonry
by and about graphic design
The Palace of Typographic Masonry is a "Gesamtkunstwerk" by and about graphic design. By bringing together a collection of sources, it aggregates research, experimentation, connections with other disciplines and the embedding of the design profession in a broader cultural history. The project takes shape in an imaginary building and is expressed in exhibitions, publications, lectures, and other initiatives. In this large and beautifully printed work, visitors will encounter a variety of expressions and mysterious signs made by Michèle Boulogne, Our Polite Society, Harriët van Reek, Edgar Walthert, and Kristiāna Marija Sproģe. These signs resemble a form of writing that can be understood as an "asemic script." Designed by Richard Niessen, who also wrote an introduction, the collected character sets come together in pursuit of inexplicable meaning. Published by the Palace of Typographic Masonry, 2022 Printed at RaddraaierSSP/Jelgava (Latvia) in an edition of 200 copies Loose folios, 16 pages, full color, 13 × 19.25 inches
