40|10Les 40 ans de la collection – les 10 ans du musée Frieder Burda
by this patron of the arts encompasses some one thousand works
Frieder Burda began collecting art over forty years ago out of a fascination for painting as a medium for emotional expression. Meanwhile the first-class collection amassed by this patron of the arts encompasses some one thousand works, from the Classical Modern period to the present. Dazzling highlights of the collection include works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, August Macke, Max Beckmann, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Gerhard Richter, Georg Baselitz, Markus Lüpertz, and Sigmar Polke. More recent positions in painting and photography encompass works by artists such as Gregory Crewdson, Axel Hütte, Karin Kneffel, and Neo Rauch. The anniversary catalogue edited by Götz Adriani and Hans-Joachim Müller contains an interview with Frieder Burda and illustrations of many of the major works in the collection. It also presents a comprehensive documentation of the decade-old Museum Frieder Burda, celebrating its masterful architecture, designed by Richard Meier.
