Alphabettes Soup: Feminist Approaches to Type
Alphabettes Soup celebrates ten years of feminist approaches to type design, research, publishing, and community-building through a wide-ranging anthology of essays, interviews, visual histories, and reflections drawn from and expanding upon the Alphabettes platform. Addressing intersections between typography, language, culture, technology, labor, and education, the publication brings together an expansive international network of designers, educators, researchers, and typographers working across contemporary type culture. Conceived simultaneously as a reader and a type specimen, the book showcases more than 100 typefaces designed by women and non-binary practitioners. Contributions by Alessia Mazzarella, Karen Cheng, Veronika Burian, Nadine Chahine, Nina Paim, and many others appear alongside interviews with Alice Savoie, Bye Bye Binary, Fiona Ross, Kathleen Sleboda, and additional contributors from across the fields of typography, publishing, and design education. More than an anthology, Alphabettes Soup functions as both a substantial survey and record of contemporary type discourse as well as an expansive typographic specimen. The publication offers readers a dense and visually rich entry point into current conversations shaping the future of type design. Aimed at challenging dominant narratives in type history and contemporary practice, Alphabettes Soup seeks to inspire future generations to create their own decentralized design communities. Includes interviews with Alice Savoie, Bye Bye Binary (Camille Circlude, Ludi Loiseau, Eugénie Bidaut, Sophie Vela, and Enz@ Le Garrec), Carolina Giovagnoli, Fiona Ross, Georgia Angelopoulos, Jessica Harjo, Irene Vlachou, Kathleen Sleboda, Loraine Furter, Maha Akl, Mohamed Gaber, Monique Ortman, María Ramos, Sadie Red Wing, and Violet Duncan.
