Auguste Rodin

by

Auguste Rodin's extraordinary watercolors are less familiar to the general public than his grandiose bronzes - sculptures that set standards for later generations. Yet these studies done with breathtaking lightness are no less significant as works of art - indeed, their enthusiastic naturalism and openness make them almost more timeless and modern than his sculptures. In addition to preliminary watercolor studies for his sculptures, this section of Rodin's oeuvre includes a large number of erotic silhouettes, some of them quite explicit: cheerful, warm-hearted sketches with which the artist unabashedly "papered" the walls of his studio. This small volume presents a delightful selection of enchanting watercolors from the artist's estate administered by the Musée Rodin in Paris. (French edition ISBN 978-3-7757-1511-9) The artist: Auguste Rodin (Paris 1840 - 1917 Meudon). Studied art in Paris; 1876: traveled in Italy; 1883; met Camille Claudel; 1900: exhibited at his own pavilion at the Paris World's Fair. Exhibition schedule: Städtische Galerie Ravensburg, October 10, 2004 – January 16, 2005
