For a long time, Picasso's sculptural oeuvre was one of the best-kept secrets of 20th century art. It was only through retrospectives in Paris, London and New York in the sixties that Picasso, the sculptor, became known to a larger public, revealing a complexity and variety in his sculptures that easily equals that of his pictorial and graphic works. A seminal work informed by conversations between the author and his artist friend Picasso, this publication by the Picasso expert Werner Spies also includes a catalogue raisonné of Picasso´s sculptures. The present edition has been thoroughly revised and now includes numerous color illustrations of important works. It features about 740 works by the artist, ranging from tiny little figures torn from paper to constructions from metal, wood and found objects, folding sculptures made from tin to large, often monumental works. The book is one of the most inclusive works on Picasso's sculptures, which, in their ingenuity and inventiveness, still provide an inexhaustive source of inspiration for today's artists. (English edition available ISBN 3- 7757-0909-6) The author: Werner Spies, born in Tübingen in 1937. Studies of art history, Romance languages and philosophy in Vienna, Tübingen and Paris. Professor for 20th century art since 1975 at the Kunstakademie in Dusseldorf. 1997-2000 head of the Musée National d´Art Moderne at the Centre Pompidou, Paris. Werner Spies organizes international exhibitions, is the author of seminal works about 20th century art and editor of the Max Ernst catalogue raisonné. He has gained international recognition for his work as a critic and essay writer.
