With the presentation of a number of young Australian artists, this book documents contemporary art on the island, providing valuable insights into the vital and innovative art scene of the fifth continent. In a variety of ways, this illustrates the cultural conditioning of representational patterns. The artists show a special, idiosyncratic affinity with the new media, which may be partially interpreted as an expression of resistence to the idea that at the beginning of the new millennium artistic creation is still regional. However, both in the production and the reception of art, the artists move in entirely different contexts. They continue the debate on center and marginalization, and even question it. The publication not only features essays on individual aspects of the Australian art scene but also offers extensive documentation of the oeuvres of the artists presented.
