Peter Bialobrzeski

by

Over a period of three years, the German photographer Peter Bialobrzeski made several journeys to India, where he visited religious sites and explored the mystique and the soul of the Indian subcontinent. Far from pretending to comprehend the complexities of Eastern religions, he creates a unique field of tensions in his photographs. While his works reflect the curiosity of the spiritual seeker who gazes in wonder upon the sacred shrines of India, daring to profess open admiration for their beauty, they also reveal an analytical distance that transforms the holy sites of India into a stage. XXX Holy-Journeys into the Spiritual Heart of India, published by Kruse Verlag in 2000 and now available from Hatje Cantz Publishers, presents Bialobrzeski's photos as two-page color plates. The photographs are accompanied by texts from Mick Brown, author of The Spiritual Tourist, and Florian Hanig, who edited the Asia issues of MERIAN for many years and is currently a contributing author to GEO spezial. The photographer: Peter Bialobrzeski, born in 1961, Wolfsburg. 1988-1993 studied at the Folkwangschule in Essen; 1991/92 further studies at the London College of Printing; 1997 membership of the DFA (Deutsche Fotografische Akademie - German Academy of Photography). He has been a professor of Photography at the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen since 2002. In addition to his activities as an independent art photographer, he also works on assignment for national and international periodicals, agencies and businesses.
