Von Rodin bis Baselitz

The torso in Modernist sculpture covers as wide a range of formats as it does materials. This volume opens with the early torsos of Rodin and other classics of Modernism where Nature was still the ideal. Soon artists like Brancusi and Giacometti were heightening the concentration and abstraction of the human form. Hrdlicka and Schoenholtz presented the torso as a fragment of a whole figure, evoking thoughts of destruction and violence, while stylised torsos by Lüpertz and Kirkeby took the genre forward into the realms of neo-archaic monumentalism.
