Description
By Leah Dickerman and Anna Indych-López In 1931, Diego Rivera was the subject of The Museum of Modern Art's second monographic exhibition, which set attendance records in its five-week run. The Museum brought Rivera to New York from Mexico six weeks before the opening and provided him with a makeshift studio space in the building. There, the artist produced five "portable murals"—freestanding frescoes with images commemorating events in Mexican history—to be featured in the show. After the opening, Rivera added three more murals to the exhibition, taking on New York subjects through monumental images of the city during the Depression. 148 pp.; 110 illus.
