Erwin Bohatsch (*1951) was an influential member of the Austrian group known as the New Savages, an eighties movement whose aim was to counter the Conceptual art of the seventies, leading to a renewal of the aesthetic phenomenon of painting. Reflecting on Classical Modernism, the group's themes were guided by an interest in approaches to ethnographic research and the theories of Claude Lévi-Strauss.
