Abe Kobo
Kōbō Abe was a Japanese writer, playwright, director, and photographer known for his modernist and surreal explorations of contemporary society. Born Kimifusa Abe, he earned a medical degree from Tokyo Imperial University before pursuing a career in literature. His diverse body of work includes avant-garde poetry, novels, and plays, most notably the 1962 novel The Woman in the Dunes. He was elected a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1977.
