George Catlin was an American lawyer, painter, and traveler known for his extensive documentation of Native American life on the frontier. During the 1830s, he completed five expeditions to the American West to create portraits and written accounts of the Plains Indians. His earlier career included producing engravings of the Erie Canal, which were featured in a notable 1825 publication documenting the completion of the New York canal system.
