Hans Hofmann

Hans Hofmann was a German-born American painter and teacher whose career bridged two continents and generations. Active in the early twentieth-century European avant-garde, he brought a synthesis of Fauvism and Cubism to the United States in 1932. His work is defined by a rigorous focus on pictorial structure and bold color, influencing the development of Abstract Expressionism through his painting and pedagogy.
