Sam Gilliam

Sam Gilliam (1933–2022) was an American abstract painter, sculptor, and arts educator based in Washington, D.C. Initially associated with the Washington Color School, he evolved his practice in the mid-1960s by incorporating sculptural elements and process-based techniques into his work, moving beyond traditional color field painting.
