Björk: Archives

by

A beautiful book about the music, fashion and artistry of the celebrated Icelandic pop star, Björk. Björk at The Museum of Modern Art in 2015 brought together sounds, videos, objects, instruments, costumes, and images from the Icelandic singer-songwriter and producer's career. The show was highly experimental. All visitors, for example, were required to wear plastic masks of Bjork’s face as they walked through the exhibits. The exhibition split critics. Art Tomorrow described the show basically what happens when you interbreed a Chuck E. Cheese franchise, a dead swan, a party of elves breakdancing atop a volcano' while Blouart.info found it a 'majestic masterstroke, a pitch-perfect, seamless celebration of one of contemporary reality’s most poignant pioneers'. The accompanying catalogue has been critically well-received and was a finalist in the 2015 British Book Design & Production Awards. It comprises six parts: four booklets, a paperback and a poster featuring artwork from Björk's albums and singles; The booklets cover a wide range of subjects. In one, music critic Alex Ross compares Björk's music to classical and contemporary composers. Another includes a wild and wonderful email conversation between Björk and philosopher, Timothy Morton. In a third, Björk's constant collaborator, Icelandic poet Sjón weaves a lyrical journey through the pop star's albums. His poem is complemented perfectly with fashion and editorial photography of Björk through the ages.
