I Don’t Know Her Name, But I Know Her Work

From December 2017 through February 2018, Central Saint Martins exhibited work by past and present students of graphic design in an exhibition titled I Don't Know Her Name, But I Know Her Work . The name of the exhibition reflects the often overheard observation about graphic design by women that while their work seems familiar, their names are not. Along with making new work, students researched the careers of historical female designers and wrote extended captions about their own work and work from the Central Saint Martins Museum & Study Collection. The catalogue is a wonderful keepsake of the exhibition and features new work influenced by the methods and materials used in the featured historic graphic design works by Freda Lingstrom, Dora Batty, Enid Marx, Mary Kessell, Dorothy Hutton, Margaret Calkin James, “Herry” Perry and Claire Leighton. With examples of posters, prints, typography and photography by Eve Afifah, Irene Albino, Daragh Anderson, Daniel Chapman, Elizabeth Critchlow, Ellen Jonsson, Anoushka Khandawala, Roberta Lor Wing Sze, Marella Penrose, Ellen Powley, Catarina Sacramento, Alva Skog, Lily Smallwood, and Etta Voorsanger-Brill.
