Rome: The City and Its People

by

New York: The Viking Press, 1959. First Edition. Hardcover, 189pp., 9 x 11 inches. Near fine. Edgewear to dust jacket along top and bottom edges. Closed 1/2 inch tear to front near spine. Slight separation to lamination on inside dust jacket flap, about two inches in length, as well as along half of spine. Pages quite bright with mild toning toward edges. Beautiful first edition from one of the fathers of street photography. The second title in Klein's famous series of city-based publications, the others being New York , Tokyo , Moscow , and Torino '90 . Split into five sections - Roman Citizens, The Street, the Eternal City, Youth, and the Catholic World - the book is a prime example the sharp immediacy in Klein's photographic eye. According to Federico Fellini, "this is the best Rome there is and Klein is the best photographer there is. He knows Rome like a book and this is it."
