Teletext Type Specimen

by

A 20-page specimen presenting Maxitype's Teletext, a humanist pixel typeface based on Adrian Frutiger’s late 1970s design Caractères TVP. The publication, produced in collaboration with the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich, Graphics Collection, underlines the typeface’s unique blend of humanist warmth and pixel-based construction. Teletext originated from Frutiger’s commission for the French electronics manufacturer Thomson-CSF, who needed a typeface for the low-resolution CRT monitors displaying departure and arrival times at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport. Working within the constraints of a 16 × 16 pixel grid with an unusual 1:2 ratio, Frutiger produced letterforms that retained the open counters and clarity of his humanist approach while incorporating pixel-specific adaptations—light traps, slab endings, and pixelated teardrop shapes—to counter screen bleed and enhance legibility. Frutiger's successful adaptation to technical limitations of the time was short-lived, as a new generation of screens were produced that could support Frutiger's Alphabet Roissy, the main typeface used for signage at the airport While Frutiger's original sketches were limited to twenty-six capital letters, ten numerals, one arrow and five punctuation signs, Maximage has expanded Teletext into a fully functioning typeface with lowercase, diacritics, symbols, multiple stylistic sets, and contemporary features. Includes a font license for Teletext full family.
