This long out of print book has some separation damage where the pages attach to the "perfect bound" style spine, mainly in the center pages (see photos). No pages are loose and it is sturdy/intact enough to read and handle easily as long as care is taken not to leave it open to the same page for very long periods, carry it around flopping open, etc. On the front of the book there are some minor scuffs and along the edges of the front and back covers there are small white marks and curls, however overall, the book is in great condition considering it is 38 years old. Interior pages look great; they are unmarked and the many photos include many high definition glossy prints. Titled "An Ideal for Living: An History of Joy Division" by Mark Johnson, this is the expanded 2nd edition published by Bobcat Books and printed in Glasgow, Scotland in 1986, revised from the original 1984 version published by Proteus. It's a comprehensive chronological history of Joy Division, "From their mythical origin as The Stiff Kittens, [through the Warsaw era,] to their programmed future as New Order [up to the beginning of the Blue Monday era]". It covers 1976-1982, from proto industrial punks to one of the most influential post punk bands of all time, ending with their rebirth as genre pushing electronic music pioneers. It is a chronologically organized, extensive collection of reviews and recollections of gigs big and small; TV, radio & press appearances; a discography including bootleg recordings and unofficial releases; album and promotional art including much of the iconic design work of Peter Saville and Factory Records, rare photos by professionals such as Anton Corbijn as well as even rarer snapshots taken by fans and friends; quotes from band members, associates, colleagues, fans, and journalists including several essays by Paul Morley.
