Along with Robert Gober and Jeff Koons, Haim Steinbach is one of the most famous American exponents of the late seventies art movement which endeavored to revamp the tradition of Duchamp as a reaction to then prevalent neo-expressive wave of painting by endowing everyday objects with sculptural qualities. The artist has gained world fame with his "thing altars", carefully manufactured shelves containing borrowed or purchased objects that take on new meaning in the context of their new surroundings - quite in the sense of Robert Smithson´s idea of "site" and "non- site". This book documents his installation North East South West at Neuer Berliner Kunstverein and Haus der Kunst München, as well as selected installations since 1979. For his work North East South West, Steinbach produced video interviews with residents of Berlin and Munich about the objects they have in their homes. Borrowing these objects from his interviewees, he "arranges the arrangements", giving the objects a new visibility. Employing a scaffolding system as a display device, Steinbach delineates spaces, channeling people towards new and unexpected relationships and meanings. The artist: Haim Steinbach, born 1944 in Rehovot, Israel. Numerous exhibitions, among them participation in the 1992 documenta IX at Kassel and the Venice Biennale in 1993 and 1997. Moved to New York in 1957.
