If the main theme of documenta IX, unofficially at least, was the body and all things corporeal, then Matthew Barney, still a rank outsider in 1992 but now a highly lauded rising star, can certainly lay claim to having played a major role. Like Cindy Sherman, FLATZ or Gilbert & George, Barney uses the body - often his own - as the material, medium and vehicle of his concepts. His sculptures, performances and video installations feature androgynous creatures, surreal hermaphrodites and mythological figures. The body is distorted, hypertrophic, extended by prostheses and protuberances, playing the game of transcendence and creativity through restraint.ì In Drawing Restraint, a video installation in book form, satyrs - Dionysian fertility demons - instill panic fear and infernallust. The artist: Matthew Barney was born in San Francisco in 1967 and currently lives in New York. In 1991 he caused a sensation with his first major solo exhibition at the Barbara Gladstone Gallery in New York, who represent him, as does the Stuart Regen Gallery in Los Angeles. He took part in the 1993 Venice Biennial (Aperto, "Europe 2000" Prize) and the 1992 documenta IX in Kassel.
