Dutch architect and furniture maker Gerrit Th. Rietveld (Utrecht, 1888-1964) is one of the most celebrated designers of the twentieth century. He achieved worldwide fame with his Red-Blue Chair and the Schröder House. Rietveld was a member of De Stijl and also played a prominent role in the Nieuwe Bouwen movement. With over a hundred realized buildings and countless pieces of furniture to his name he is one of the pioneers of modern culture. In this lavishly illustrated publication, leading national and international authors shed light on Rietveld's iceas, exploring his work and practices against the backdrop of his milieu, his peers and the social and political developments of his day. Rietveld's own personal universe, background, network and worldview also receive ample attention. By concentrating on his working practices and comparing them with those of contemporaries such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe, this book paints a surprising new picture of Rietveld's incomparable contribution to the visual arts, architecture and design of the twentieth century.
