Seventeen years ago, the Marburg-based businesswoman Hilde Eitel (1915–2010) bequeathed her art collection to the Marburg Universitätsbund so that after her death it would be exhibited in a museum of art and cultural history. Eitel began collecting postwar art in the fifties, including the approximately sixty works that are now part of the Marburg Museum .
