This volume is the second in a series on the research project GAM—Global Art and the Museum, which was initiated by Hans Belting and Peter Weibel at the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe. The goal of the project is to analyze the situation in which art museums, the art market, and art criticism find themselves in a globalized world. The Global Art World comprises a collection of essays presented by experts at two international conferences. Hans Belting and Andrea Buddensieg W here Is Art Contemporary? to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the ZKM in October 2007, and it was attended by representatives of museums from throughout the world. The conference focused on the question of how the museum should define itself as an institution in the age of globalization and how old structures can be transformed into new concepts and presentational forms. This is a companion volume to Contemporary Art and the Museum: A Global Perspective, published in 2007.
