In the 1960s fashion mogul Theo Wormland (1907–1983) began building one of the most important private collections of Surrealist works; in 2013 it was bequeathed to the Pinakothek der Moderne, where it will be honored by a special, large exhibition. The collection, which has been on permanent loan to the Modern Art Collection in Munich for thirty years, contains world-famous masterpieces by Max Ernst, René Magritte, and Pablo Picasso, as well as figurative sculptures and paintings from the 1960s and ‘70s.
